Fall’s Must-Haves

Fall is my favorite season for fashion. I’m packing away the denim micro mini’s of summer and clearing out to closet to stock-up on this season’s must-haves.

I Heart the Skinny

Aritzia had this phrase splashed across their store fronts a while back, causing quite a stir. No, they weren’t promoting anorexia or bulimia, but the uber cool skinny jean trend worn by all the fashionable Hollywood IT girls like Sienna Miller, Mischa Barton, Nicole Ritchie, Rachel Bilson and Kate Moss. Skinny’s are everywhere, but honestly, you need a certain silhouette, skinny in particular (hence the name) to wear this trend. Don’t hate me, I didn’t create the trend. For a definition of the Skinny Bitch, please refer to Shop Talk.

Wear `em with pretty ballet flats, a killer pair of heels or tuck them into a pair of tall boots. Note of caution, if you do want to wear the jeans tucked into boot look, you must wear a pair of skinny jeans cause the worse look is the flare or bootcut jean stuffed into a pair of nice boots. Even if you’re lucky enough to get them into the boot, they won’t look good cause the denim will be all bunched up at the knee. You can find skinny’s everywhere including Aritzia, Cattiva, The Block, Off the Wall Fidelity’s Adore, Mavi (the Lindy), American Eagle (the Skinny Stretch) and even the Gap.

The Fabulous Coat

A fabulous coat never goes out of style. I had to quickly run out of the store when I tried on the Wilfred line of cashmere coats at Aritzia last week. It was a double-breasted cream number with a high collar, my heart dropped, it was stunning. I knew if I stared at myself any longer in the mirror (I’m vain), I’d buy it. I’m still having some nightmares about the coat, I hope they go away, or I’ll have to go back and buy the damn jacket.

If you’re tight on the money, you’ll find some alternatives at Urban Behavior. This is the trendy one-season alternative investment. Don’t cringe. It’s ok to buy cheap clothes sometimes. The key is the fitting. If the coat fits you well, it will automatically look more expensive.

And finally, if you have some serious coin to drop, then try on a beautifully tailored and chic Mackage jacket. Mackage has been featured in all the leading fashion mags, Lucky, Elle, and Flare and they’re Canadian, from Quebec. Mackage jackets are available at Zioni and Tru Drama in Oakridge Centre.

Back to the Old School

Everyone loves the old school. I love the 80’s, remember She-Ra, Jem and the Care Bears. Last year it was all about the Junk Food tee’s and the old school prints, this year it’s all about the 80’s inspired wide belt. It’s the perfect accessory to finish off your outfit. Wear it over a simple dress, tailored shirt or long sweater. It should sit around your tummy area. I’ve seen girl’s wear `em just below the boobs, sorry hun, that’s just not working. You’ll find a variety of wide belts at Aldo Accessories, Dynamite, Sirens, Bebe, Le Chateau and Club Monaco.

The Ankle Boot: Love or Hate?

Boots are always fabulous for fall, but every season there’s a new spin. This year’s IT boot is the ankle boot. I’ve seen pictures of countless celebs rockin’ this look, including Beyonce, Kate Moss and Sienna Miller. They’re everywhere in the stores, Aldo, Nine West, Le Chateau and Gravity Pope all have ankle boots on their shelves. I’m still on the fence about these. Love or Hate?

It’s All About the Legs

Cropped leggings made a big comeback with summer with the legging underneath the denim mini-skirt look. I first spotted this look on all the salesgirls at Abercrombie and Hollister. To tell you the truth, I was quite horrified when I first saw the look (what was wrong with these Americans!), but I have since warmed up to the trend. To take this look into the fall, pair your leggings with a big cozy knit sweater and tall boots.

WTF is Houndstooth

My best friend loves houndstooth. The first time she mentioned it, I was like “What the f*ck is Houndstooth”? This pattern is known as Houndstooth. If you step into Zara or Le Chateau, you’ll see lots of coats, skirts and blouses in this bold pattern, with the black and white colour scheme being the classic choice.

It’s got a very old school feel, as in 60’s not 80’s. I can imagine myself wearing a beautiful houndstooth coat walking down the streets of Paris with my hot French boyfriend Jean-Luc eating some yummy decadent French pastry. Realistically it’d be walking down English Bay with a sweet cupcake from Cupcakes with Jean-Luc (I imported the hot French guy).

You Won’t Get Arrested

See which trend works for you. Adapt it if you need to. And if all else fails, just do your own thing. The fashion police won’t come after you. Promise.
