Rainbow Bright Tights

Grey is one of fall’s hottest colours; however with fall comes chilly, dark evenings, cloudy skies and our return to those drab buildings - otherwise known as school or work. Luckily, this fall you can keep colourful and cozy with bright tights to avoid blending into the background.

Gold and silver lamé or bright jewel tones will help brighten up any outfit. Add some bling to your outfit with gold or silver lamé tights from H&M.

If that’s too flashy for you, try a pair of shiny stirrup tights from American Apparel. The tights are available in six colours that run the gamut from subtly sexy black and neutrals to downright outrageous with its more adventurous colours.

Check out the jewel-toned tights, which are all really hot for fall. Pick up a pair at stores such as H&M, Urban Outfitters, American Apparel and Aldo Accessories. Barney purple or lovely fuchsia are top picks – but remember, when choosing bright legwear, be bold and make a statement. After all, you’ve got to play this trend up the right way.

Discovering Evan & Dean

Fashion is full of designer twosomes: Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana of Dolce & Gabbana, Dean and Dan Caten of D Squared, Chip and Pepper Foster of Chip & Pepper Denim, Milla Jovovich and Carmen Hawk of Jovovich-Hawk and Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough of Proenza Schouler.

But there’s a hot, new design duo in town: Raymond Boutet and Lyle Reimer of Evan & Dean, a Vancouver-based label started in a café five years ago, where the adorable twosome were discussing passion in life. “It got me thinking, well, what am I passionate about?” says Boutet. “I couldn’t really come up with anything, but what I could come up with was one craft that I’d done my entire life, never grew tired of and always went back to - sewing.” Boutet immediately enrolled himself into design school, launching Evan & Dean – named after their little nephews – with Reimer shortly after. “Passion needs to be in all aspects of your life, not just in your relationship,” Reimer adds.

The duo come from very “different aesthetic views”, with Boutet being drawn to the architectural and Reimer being drawn by to the artsy-eclectic. Together, these seemingly polar opposite visual philosophies produce beautifully tailored Evan & Dean pieces, each coupled with the right amount of funky edge and detailing to appeal to all style palettes. “It’s that constant search for balance and compromise,” explains Reimer.

Their Fall 2007 collection was originally inspired by an “I Love Lucy” episode, in which Lucy wrongly assumes Ricky is having an affair, infiltrating the men’s club he attends. This television episode helped create an architectural fall collection reflective of men’s suiting and traditional menswear with feminine elements, influenced by secret clubs of the elite. Think prints inspired by men’s ties, earthy tones, pinstripes, houndstooth, re-worked trench coats, trousers, silk, velvet and argyle. Every collection from the label is inspired by music to movies to pop culture to nature to art galleries to random conversations, things from the everyday that bring happiness, wonderment, knowledge and discovery into life.

Evan & Dean is available on the west coast of Canada and the east coast of the United States. On the left coast, the label can be found at Miss Coquette in Vancouver and Nushins Designer European Boutique in Victoria. On the right coast, Evan & Dean is carried at Juno & Jove in Florida and Apple The Second in Illinois.

For BC Fashion Week, Evan & Dean is presenting their Spring 2008 collection of forty-four ready-to-wear and three couture pieces – all inspired by entomology, or the study of bugs – on September 29th at 8:30 pm in the Performance Works Theatre at Granville Island, sponsored by M.A.C. and FASHION Magazine.

Evan & Dean. Two names you won’t ever forget.
