Row, Row, Row Your Rowley

November is nearly here. This means so is the beginning of the holiday season, a time when your social agenda becomes overwhelmingly full of parties, events, family gatherings and, of course, New Year’s Eve. For fashionistas everywhere, this also means trying to find the perfect little dress and sparkly accessories to take you from party A to party B.

Going with something from Cynthia Rowley – a fashion and lifestyle brand that now includes women’s wear, accessories (shoes, bags and belts), fragrance, baby items, cosmetics, dishes and even bicycles – will be a surefire style decision.

Instead of the typical LBD (little black dress), scoop up Cynthia Rowley’s quilted silk tunic, which is currently a frock favorite for Hollywood it-starlets like Hayden Panettiere, who was recently seen wearing a bright blue version on the red carpet. If bright blue isn’t a good shade on you, the dress also comes in rich jewel tones, as well as darker winter colors, like plum.

To give a little jazz to your new quilted silk tunic, pair it with Rowley’s "Aurora Borealis" tights from her Fall 2007 collection. The models in Rowley’s Spring 2008 New York Fashion Week presentation wore theirs with ankle booties, but those saucy strappy heels in your closet work just as well.

If you’re already writing out your holiday wish list, be sure to add Cynthia Rowley’s customized California beach cruisers — available at New York’s flagship boutique — so those with friends in the Big Apple better start calling in some favors. The bikes come in signature prints and candy colors like baby blue, mint, ivory, camel, navy and light pink. They launched at New York’s Spring 2008 collections, with models riding them down the runway — and Rowley herself not too far behind on one — for a rockin’ good grand finale.

After all, haven’t you been a good girl this year?

Favourite Falsies

Three things that make us green with envy: Angelina’s pouty lips, Reese’s cute heart-shaped face and J.Lo’s lashes. And while we’re not big on injections and our face is for us to embrace, we can definitely channel the always flawless J.Lo by popping on a pair of fabulous false eyelashes! Ah…you didn’t think hers were real did you?

Adding some lashes, whether they’re full length strip (apply to entire lash line) or individual lashes (apply to the top end outer corners) will take you from girl-next-door to doe-eyed soap star quick as a wink! No need for lash envy! Here are my top five fave falsies (in no particular order):

1. Scott Barnes “Marissa” Eyelash Strips are made of natural human hair and tied on a clear spine. This may be as close as you get to J.Lo’s luscious lashes since Scott is her personal makeup artist. Pick them up at the Beauty Bar for $15 a pair.

2. Dianne Brill Lash Lingerie comes in a cute lingerie inspired packaged teal box tied with a black tulle bow. I’m sold on the box alone. The set of three pairs sells for $45 and included two demi pairs (one with adorable sparkly bling) and one full pair, doubled on the ends for extra va-va-voom! Available at the Beauty Bar.

3. Whiplash lashes are made of 100% human hair which makes them super comfy to wear and as natural as a strip lash can look! And, at $10 bucks a pair, you can stock your vanity for every blinking occasion. Whip by Yaletown’s BeautyMark and bat your baby blues!

4. Between MAC and Make Up For Ever, they stock everything from everyday-looking lashes to crazy, sexy and cool lashes in every size, weave and colour of the rainbow. From around $13 and up. Don’t forget your glue. My favorite is Duo latex adhesive which you can pick up at MAC or London Drugs.

5. Ardell Lashes have long stocked my pro kit, especially the individual lashes. Three to five individual lashes on the outer corners will keep you looking bright-eyed and bushy–tailed! From about $5.99 at London Drugs.

But, if you just can’t deal, leave it to the pros at Shu Uemura, Canada’s first eyelash bar in Holt Renfrew.

A set of falsies really does put the “F in fabulous!

All SCOOPED Up

Shopping circles have been a buzz over SCOOP; a temporary boutique that will pop-up and tear-down before the official naughty or nice list comes out (Santa Baby, slip some Manolo’s underneath the tree for me!). What we do know is SCOOP buyers base their picks on major trends and trips to the same LA design studios frequented by Kitson and Fred Segal buyers. Grab an eggnog latte and get ready to wrestle at the racks for ball gowns, trench coats, jewels, and chic home accessories. To prepare for what could be the first official ‘shopping high’ of the holiday season, The Style Spy tracked down owner Deb Nichol for the scoop on SCOOP!

What will shoppers find in-store?
A large gallery-like shopping space with collections of product that change all the time. Many customers tell us we remind them of the US retailer Anthropology in that we carry such a diverse product mix. It’s like walking into a furniture store that carries equally great fashion finds, accessories, and anything else that is fun, cool and desirable.

To stuff into stockings?
Charlotte Rhys body products at incredible savings, the yummiest candy laden pretzels and chocolates from New York, Honeydew rumba panties, lip gloss, spa products, candles….the average person who shops SCOOP during the holiday season buys all their stocking stuffers from us.

For label lovers what are some brands available?
Udderly Perfect Peace on Earth thermals, a favourite among the Hollywood crowd, are now in stock. We jet to LA weekly to restock our shelves and to stay current. A large selection of Matt and Nat handbags and Kersh sweaters. SCOOP also carries home decor by Vancouver favourites 18Karat and Torre & Tagus. Every item we carry we love.

What is the price range?
There are hundreds of gift items for under $25. Cropped in-style jackets go for $69 and up, skinny and wide leg jeans range from $49 to $69, and sexy Holiday tops start at $39. All well priced, all great styles! SCOOP is not a discount store, but we pass on savings whenever we get price breaks and with our unique business model we don’t need the high mark ups that some retailers take.

SCOOP has two locations:

2928 Granville Street, South Granville, Vancouver
OPENS November 1st / CLOSES December 23rd
Hours: Mon-Sat 10-6 Sun 11-5

1434 Marine Drive, West Vancouver
OPENS November 7th / CLOSES December 16th
Hours: Mon-Sat 10-6 Sun 11-5

Oh the Holidays!

Christmas and more importantly, Boxing Day are brightly highlighted on my calendar. Love the holidays. Get togethers with my family and friends. Starbucks peppermint mochas served in their signature red cups. And holiday makeup gift sets! I started spotting holiday sets this week, make sure to shop early so you don’t miss out.

Dior has released a gorgeous ‘I Love Dior’ Deluxe Holiday Palette, complete with six shimmering shadows, bronzing powder, gloss and my favourite, a deluxe travel size Diorshow Mascara. Available at Holt Renfrew.

Laura Mercier is taking reservations for their sets of eye and gloss palettes, mini lip plumper and brush sets that will be sold in mid-November. Available at Holt Renfrew.

The MAC Collections are always fabulous. This season’s Royal Asset antique-inspired eye and lip palettes and Heirlooms brush sets do not disappoint. Available at MAC stores and MAC counters at The Bay.
