Get The Look

She took home Best Supporting Actress at the Emmy Awards, starred in a comedy that was a box-office success, and got married to her longtime boyfriend, all within the same year.

With the release of 27 Dresses, as well as her continued effort on the set of Grey’s Anatomy, Katherine Heigl proves more than just being endowed with great looks and good humor. Her rocketing career has given her even more exposure and attention that demands a picture-perfect image at any moment in the day. Luckily for Heigl, fashionable and sophisticated looks are effortless with classic coats and patent leather heels.

2. Juicy Couture Shift Dress, Revolve Clothing
3. Woven Doctor Bag, Urban Outfitters
4. Sam Edelman Lenny Heel, Urban Outfitters

Single in the City

Recently, I hit the dating scene again after me and my long-term boy went Splitsville. After a break-up it’s only natural to arrive at the old adage “out with the old, in with the new.” And I’m not talking about the boys, I’m talking about the wardrobe.

Get asked out on one hot date and instantly panic ensues. What am I going to wear? A few consultations with lady friends and voila, a list of must-have items that every gal should have at her disposal in case of an impromptu (and yummy) date.

1. Damn, I Know I Look Hot in this Shirt
Own it, work it, flaunt it, in a sassy top. The Linette Bodysuit ($111.15; Marciano) is definitely for the brave. Ruched detailing at the front of this sexy one piece will keep the tummy looking tight.

2. Smack That Jeans
Cameron D. and Jessica Simpson are fans of William Rast jeans to keep their booties looking fine. The Belle Flap Pocket Flare Jean (Oliver Barret) highlights all the right ‘ass’ets.

3. Money Maker Shoes
Nothing says lovin’ like a pair of Corsica Leather Sandals ($139; Bebe) in black. The 4.5 inch strappy beauties have somewhat of a bondage look, but in a good way. Can we say hot to trot?

4. A Girly ‘Out to Lunch’ Dress
For the afternoon date it’s important to not look too overdone. The Lux In Between Days Dress ($49.99; Urban Outfitters) in purple or grey is silky smooth and trimmed with crochet cut-outs and embroidery. Hungry anyone?

5. Clutch Your Goods
Don’t leave home without date night goodies (aka mints, lipgloss, blush, a quarter for call best friends for a mid-outing update). With the leather Vendeen clutch in black multi (SALE $24.98; Aldo Accessories) it’s easy not to pack light.

And always remember talk is cheap, but Style Spy girls aren’t. In other words don’t try too hard. We are all that glitters.

Mascara Mix

When it comes to a fabulous fringe (for your eyes, that is) there is no end to the myriad of marvelous mascara choices! Every makeup line we can name promises sexy, clump-free, bambi lashes that won’t quit, but we know better than to fall prey to glamorama ad campaigns and lofty promises (you know they are sporting falsies in the ads, right?). It’s all about trial and error. What works for one, may not work for another and since a tube of mascara needs to be tossed every three months, you can try at least four a year! *Tip - adhere a label to your mascara that states the date you opened it…you’ll stave off icky eye infections as well as the ever-attractive raccoon impression from crumbly dried up mascara flakes!!

So, next time you hit the drugstore or the department store, keep these four tried, tested and true tubes in mind. And, if you just can’t decide on one alone, use a couple! Mix them up – use one for lengthening and separating and one for volumizing. You’ll reap the benefits of the wand and the formula without batting a lash!

1. L’oreal Voluminous Volume Building Mascara – a staple in this Style Spy’s makeup kit! Creates volume where there never was with a substantial and fluffy wand. A drugstore steal at around $10.

2. Maybelline New York Great Lash Mascara – the old pink and green standby complete with a smallish brush that makes it easy to lift and separate from root to tip even if you lashes are itsy bitsy! A legendary mascara and very inexpensive at about $5.99.

3. Lancome Courbe Virtuose Mascara – who doesn’t love a product with a French name? It’s bound to make you feel, tres chic, just for owning it, non? With a curved wand, you can skip the eyelash curler with this one. The curling affect is great and the formula holds the curl for hours. Hit the Lancome counter in The Bay and pick it up for about $23.50.

4.THE MASCARA by Kevyn Aucoin - made by the pro of all pro makeup artists, this mascara is a coveted fav! It wears incredibly well and doesn’t come off until you take it off. When you do, use warm water or makeup remover. We love the volume formula and the shiny red tube is super sexy! At Beautymark for $30.

Collabo Your World

You just can’t open up the glossy pages of a Vogue, W, Elle or NYLON magazine these days without reading about some new collaboration between a fashion brand and a guest designer.

Fashion is a highly interactive world among the creative elements. This industry wouldn’t be as fascinating, fast-paced and fabulous without a healthy – and necessary — dose of music, art, product design and, dare I say, celebrity. People like to own a piece of fashionable luxury through the interpretation of someone they admire a lower price point – who wouldn’t? So here are some of The Style Spy’s top fashion collabos for past and current seasons.

1. Stella McCartney for Adidas. Yes, everyone loves to work out in their Lululemons, but McCartney’s designs for the German sport giant brings femininity and ready-to-wear influences to dance, yoga, tennis, running and golf gear. So now, not only will you kick butt on the treadmill, at least your outfit won’t be the same as 80% of other gals at the gym.

2. Big name designer for Target. This is really a no-brainer among the fashion-eratti and the fashion clueless. The mass retailer has been steadily releasing capsule collections created by the industry’s most coveted designers: Proenza Schouler, Izaac Mizrahi, Sophie Albou of Paul & Joe, Erin Fetherston (pictured above), Luella Bartley and Libertine. An ivory cocoon coat from Erin Fetherston or a Proenza Schouler bustier top at a less than 10% of the runway price? Sign me up.

3. Kirsten Dunst for Lutz & Patmos. Little Miss Dunst has been really marking her territory on the fashion scene, recently posing for Miu Miu’s Spring/Summer 2008 ad campaign. Now she can add guest designer to her burgeoning resume, as she works to launch a comfy capsule collection with well-known, New York-based knitwear label Lutz & Patmos (pictured above). The actress joins a roster that includes Liv Tyler, Julianne Moore, Sophia Coppola, Christy Turlington and Carine Roitfeld.

4. Alice + Olivia for Payless Shoes. Designer Stacy Bendet – who I had the pleasure of interviewing a couple years back for an L.A. publication – has released a 60s and 70s, Alice in Wonderland-influenced shoe line with the footwear retailer for Spring 2008. Bendet’s own love for sky-high wedges – seeing as how the designer is so teeny tiny — was most likely a huge inspiration for the Aidan and Alice styles. Metallic flats and faux snakeskin, Converse-like slip-ons round out the collection.

Collaborations in fashion and design are ubiquitous nowadays, I admit. But I’ll forgive ubiquity to own a little bit of Stella, Isaac, Dunst or Bendet at a fraction of the original price. Stella McCartney for Adidas is available at Aritzia, Hills Of Kerrisdale, Holt Renfrew, Browns and Plenty. Target collections are available online at www.target.com. Lutz & Patmos is available at Bacci’s. Alice + Olivia for Payless is available at select stores and online at www.payless.com this Spring.
