Girl of the Week

I first met GEORGIA MURRAY at the GUESS & MTV party last Thursday. A singer/songwriter originally from Port MacNeil, BC, Georgia is currently living in between Vancouver and Victoria. If she looks familiar, you may have seen her singing the national anthem for the Vancouver Canucks at GM Place. She was also featured as one of Bootlegger’s “50 Exceptional Canadians” in their Generation B campaign held across Canada. Sweet and stylish, everyone meet Georgia.

Rockin’…Aldo brown “Frye” style boots, Talula black spandex tights, Alternate Earth Organic Clothes grey long tee shirt, Lee denim vintage vest from thrift store, Urban Outfitters floral print scarf, Katie Hughes of Ziggy Bean jewelry Dagger Earrings, Mysi Majority black faux tusk necklace and brown tassel bag.

My personal style is…I’m sort of eclectic in my choices and I get this from my mom. When I was younger I used to be embarrassed by the outfits she wore when she came to pick me up from school, but now I realize it was an expression of her individuality and uniqueness and that’s the most bad ass, fashionable thing of all! I’m also really into contrasts. I love mixing masculine with feminine…dirty grit with pretty things….hard with soft. I love unique pieces with a story. I guess I’m sorta on some vintage/rocker steez as of late.

Top shops…Mysi Majority in Victoria, all the sweet little boutiques on LoJo (lower Johnson in Victoria), any thrift store really, and I must say I love me some Urban Outfitters….and I know people always kinda hate…but Aldo…rad for cheap weekend accessories you want to pay nothing for.

Beauty must-haves…Moisturizer (Biotherm, Aquasource Bio Sensitive), Lancome Waterproof Concealer, to conceal all face flaws. Carbon matte black eyeshadow from MAC (I wet my angle brush and use the black shadow as eye liner, it stays all day and doesn’t run like eye liner pencils). A red or plum shade of lipstick, MAC of course! And….makeup remover!

Most recent purchase…1996 Metallica tour shirt, a double finger ring that certain airport security guards consider to be a weapon (brass knuckles from Aldo for $10!), 90’s floral print scarf from Urban Outfitters, Mexican hand knit wool sweater from my girlfriend’s closet (thanks Reyna!!)

Top three wardrobe essentials…A great pair of comfortable knee high boots you can walk in, a well-tailored coat with a high collar and at least one piece of big ass, junky jewelry.

Fave pair of shoes…My metal studded stilettos from Mysi and my super comfy Frye style brown boots from Aldo.

Current favourite fashion trend…I’ve been getting down with the shoulder action! I’m not so super down with full on shoulder pads…but I’m loving princess sleeves and any kind of bedazzlement on the shoulders! Also, I really love high buns on the top of the head….but my hair isn’t quite long enough to make a big bun so I end up with a flailing version.

On the iPod…I have a major heart on for Black and Blue by Miike Snow and Fooled Me Again, Honest Eyes by Lady Gaga.

One thing every girl should own…Every girl should own IT! Own their radness!! Confidence is what makes you fabulous.

Can’t live without…Pho, my insecurities and my main man/producer/DJ/supporter of life, Tony (aka D Whiz)!

You’ve Got Me Wrapped Around Your Finger

One of my most favourite accessories (aside from necklaces) are rings. This season features almost everything on a ring, literally. I’ve seen it all from the Empire State Building on a ring to owls and rabbits. Spring/Summer ‘10 is filled with big, shiny cocktail rings, thin stacks of golden rings, crazy geometric rings; you name it, it’s out there. Unfortunately I am limited to only wearing rings on my index and third finger; however, for those of you who can wear ‘em all, please do because when it comes to rings… the more the better! Aldo and Forever 21 carry a great selection of rings in a variety of sizes (especially small sizes for those of you with tiny hands like mine!) So stack on those rings and wave your hands in the air like you just don’t care! (err… but be careful so your precious rings don’t go flying off!)

Meet My…

New leather jacket. I’ve been hunting for a soft & supple short leather jacket for a while now, but I wasn’t sure if I was willing to drop $500+. So when a friend told me Danier carried a few cute numbers, I made a beeline the next day. I hadn’t been in Danier for years, thinking it was my Mom’s kind of store, so I was super impressed to find an awesome selection of modern leather jackets at a super duper price. I’m living in this jacket right now (I picked up a black one). The prettiest part of the jacket? The hidden hot pink floral jacquard lining.

Available in Black, Espresso and Charcoal in XXXS - XL. Now on sale for $149 (regular price $399) at Danier Leather.

Industry Insider - Tanya Corrao

We snuck a sneak peek at the Spring 2010 Matix Clothing line, printed marble knits, fresh fruity solids, soft cardis, slim cut denim, brushed fleece ashers, woven dresses and lightweight jumpers. A total laid-back California cool style that makes it easy for us to look good. We caught up with Matix designer, TANYA CORRAO from Torrance, California to find out more about her life in the industry and the inspiration behind the Spring collection.

What first sparked your interest in becoming a designer?
No idea I was pretty young, when girls were drawing rainbows and unicorns, I was drawing outfits and stilettos.

How would you describe your design aesthetic?

I would say, ultra soft hand feel and hidden side pockets, I’m obsessed with pockets and need them on everything I design.

What was your chief design inspiration last season? and for this upcoming season?
For Fall 2010 I was mainly inspired by mixing vintage silhouettes with new modern fabrics… or vise versa. Holiday 2010 coming up, you’ll see an updated variation of Fall, with some new details… don’t want to give anything away too soon, but we are coming out with a new mini collection, a bit more high end, yet still affordable called Lurker Label by Matix. Good stuff to come…

How would you describe the Matix girl
The Matix girl is a girl who can hang with the guys, is a bit of a tomboy but can mix a bit of femininity in there, always setting new trends, never afraid to try new things, is the one all her friends go to for new music, and never takes herself or the world too seriously.

Words of wisdom to would-be fashion designers trying to make it big?
Never mix red wine with white.

Matix is available at Trixie and Off The Wall in Toronto and the Boardroom, Showcase and Underworld in Vancouver. Prices range from $35 - $140 CAD.
