Girl of the Week

Ever wanted to pick the brain of a fashion expert? That’s exactly what The Style Spy did when we sat down with Amy Lu, one of Canada’s top freelance stylists. Amy has styled for glossies like FASHION and Interview, and worked with bands Sum 41 and Tegan and Sara. Take notes as Amy opens her fashion file, and gives a glimpse into her approachable style and matching personality.

Describe your style:
Chic, simple, feminine, and ever changing. I like looks that are easy to wear - nothing high maintenance.

Top three fashion summertime essentials?
A fantastic bikini and a black string one for back-up. Gladiator sandals - I am in love with all of them; I have 4 pairs so far.
And a summer dress. I love the whole maxi thing, but there are amazing short, flirty dresses too.

Best patio outfit?
A flirty dress and sandals. This is what makes summer so amazing - throw on a great dress and some lipgloss and you are good to go!

How do you dress for summer without revealing too much?
Pick one thing to highlight: toned legs with short shorts, décolleté with a plunging neckline, or your sexy back (thanks JT) with an open-back dress. If you show [much more], people won’t notice how amazing you look, they’ll notice how much of you they see.

The perfect summer getaway?
Anything beachy. I am in love with waves, sand, surf, sun, the smell of sunscreen and cocktails.

Fave summer hangout?
It depends what city I am in, but
I love hanging on a patio or at a backyard BBQ with friends, and of course, the beach.

Style or beauty secrets?
Be aware of what works for you, what you are comfortable in, and what you are most likely to wear. If you feel uncomfortable, you won’t look good, no matter how killer your outfit is. Embrace your style. A dress that sits in your closet, no matter how amazing, is a waste. Also, build up your wardrobe: start with the basics and work your way up. Although this sounds typical, have fun, and try new looks out. It’s fashion—we are not saving lives.

What trend are you SO OVER?
I’m over that whole excess volume through the midriff look. Yes, it hides things, but it’s not flattering or sexy on anyone.

Next purchase?
Not sure, but I would guess it’ll be soon. I usually don’t go more than a couple weeks without treating myself to something.

What nail colour are you rocking right now?
I am really into bright, perfectly manicured nails. I change the color every time I go out. Right now I’m rocking a punchy, coral color.

For a night on the town, smoky eyes or red lips?
Usually smoky eyes, but I also LOVE red lips. You can’t pick one forever,
that’s just not fair.

What are you wearing the most right now?
All the drapey, jersey stuff
: wrap sweaters, leggings, layered tanks, jersey dresses.

Celebrity you are dying to style?

Kate Moss or Sophia Loren.

Splurge on?

Anything I love. If you love something (really love it, not convince yourself you love it…) you’ll never regret the purchase.

What do you always toss in your bag before leaving home?

Blackberry, keys, something for my lips, cash, camera, and sunglasses.

Totally loved the interview. Great questions…informative answers, an envious career for sure.

p.s. I’m not crazy about the new website, but maybe will get used to it. Usually want the quick one page option for comments. Didn’t want to go to second page.
Sorry!

Can you guys have the whole article available on the main site? It’s kind of annoying to have to click to read the rest of the story every single time.

really you guys don’t like the click through? I like it because it saves space on the main site page. I do have to say (I can get picky) that I don’t like the font being used lol but I like the click through because if you really want to read an article you’ll take the one second to click through to read the rest… if they post all of their articles in full then it’ll take up a lot of space on the main page and I think they want it to be simple

Hmm I kinda agree with the click-through thing and the font but other than that the new site is pretty hot! Omg YES I want those shoes too.
