Spring Into The Future

The Vancouver-based design duo - Raymond Boutet and Lyle Reimer - behind Evan & Dean is welcoming Spring 09 with the collection Future Folk. The Style Spy sat down with the pair for an insider scoop on how this collection takes wardrobes to infinity and beyond.

Inspiration behind the seams: Future Folk [represents the] study of marrying the ancient handcrafts - specifically appliqué and toll painting - with a modern minimalist landscape. So often the future is presented in a way that is cold and untouched by humans [but] we wanted to give the feeling of a future that embraces the warmth of human contact.

One word to describe the new collection: Polished.

Most lustworthy piece: The Orion Jacket or the Charcoal Peephole sheath dress.

Any designer drama with two creative minds collaborating: There was no crazy soap opera drama between the two creative minds this season. Mutual decisions were made very smoothly, and we didn’t have to “sell” the other on a concept or fabric. We seemed to be on the same page from the get-go. The most drama in-studio was usually about what music should be playing while we worked. Cher and Barbara won the battle most of the time - thanks to Raymond - but we also listened to Dragonette a lot.

The best thing about Spring: Spring is a season that celebrates birth and new life, whether in romance or a new wardrobe. There always seems to be that little extra lovey zip in the air. Perhaps that’s why Bjork’s song “All is Full of Love” was the main music for the show at L’Oreal Fashion Week.

For the season, Style Spy girls should: Get a really great boyfriend jacket. Slightly oversized, with a boxier cut and pair it with a really great short. Time to show off those legs girls!!! Statement jewellery is also of utmost importance, and at Evan & Dean we collaborated with local Vancouver jewellery designer, Brendalyn Avender. Stunning pieces were created out of water jet cut metal that highlighted our focus of folk art. These arm and leg cuffs are the perfect way to make a grand entrance.

Evan & Dean Spring 09 Collection is available at Tenth & Proper or at The Velvet Room in Vancouver.

I love the dresses with the shoulder cutouts! One-shoulder dresses and tops and shoulder cutout dresses seem to be a major upcoming trend.
